Food and Culture

There are many different ways to explore people’s cultures and one of the best way is through food. You can find out so much about people and places through this. Food can also become a signature delicacy for particular places. I hail from Odisha, and Odia people love eating a variety of food. As a person from the east who was gonna settle in a state in the west, I was very much excited and looking forward to the food that Mumbai had to offer. Mumbai’s Vadapav was at the top of my list. It was a must-try because I needed to know if it is rightfully hyped or not. And when I had the first bite I knew it was gonna be my go-to breakfast. I liked how simple it was; there was no need for cutleries, you can just eat it on your way to work. A mess-free and convenient solution for people like me who skip breakfast because it’s such a hassle in this busy life. And it was cheap! Vadapav gained such traction among Mumbaikars because it was something that could keep up with Mumbai’s work culture. Everyone’s always in a hurry and no one has time, so the hassle-free Vadapav became a go-to food for many people.

Food becomes the identity of people’s culture and reflects their social beliefs and customs throughout history. Vadapav reflects the fast-paced and work-oriented culture of Mumbai. Pakhala, a famous dish from Odisha, helps to keep the people of Odisha hydrated during the cruel summertime. India and its diverse people offer such a variety of flavours that makes it so beautiful.

Food plays an impactful role in bringing people from diverse cultures together. I have had South Indian food in the west and North Indian food in the south. They even add their own twists to the dish. And that’s the beauty of how food brilliantly and effortlessly connects everyone from different cultures.
